History of the Gole Market 

This structure was created at the apex of four different roads - the Peshwa Road, Ramakrishna Ashram Road, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, and Bhai Veer Singh Road, all of which started from this point. It was built in 1921 as a part of Lutyen’s Delhi, and in the following years, the entire shopping complex of Connaught Place was built around it. 

The traffic roundabout around the building is highly important, as it is mainly used by government officials going to their offices and the surrounding secretarial buildings. After the independence of the country, it also became a hub for growing artists, musicians, and students who were looking for a place to come together. Over the years, it also became famous as a marketplace that housed numerous shops such as Kaleva, Bengali Sweet Shop, and the Karachi Sweet Shop. 

However, in 2007, the building was deemed unsafe after structural damage and legal disputes, and the shop owners were asked to close their shops. Following this, the shop owners rejected the offer of alternative shops, and this led to the NDMC starting reconstruction work in the market.

This oldest surviving market from the colonial times is undergoing numerous changes these days, and plans have been introduced to convert this octagonal structure into a museum, where locals and visitors alike will be able to learn about the importance of this structure and the part that it played in the history of Delhi. 

Now this earlier barricaded structure has come alive with mirrored showrooms, interesting shops, and stalls near it. Created even before the construction of Connaught Place started, this building is an important part of Delhi’s history, and this is the main reason why people are invested in its restoration works.
